Kiwi Nutrition Counseling would like to wish you a Happy Sunday and a Healthy Hot Chocolate!
With this cold, blistery weather and snow on the ground a lot of us want to hide away inside and settle in with a cup of something warming. Sometimes on days like these, tea and coffee just won’t do, and hot chocolate is what we crave! Try one of my healthier hot chocolate recipes on your cold Sunday for a sweet treat that won’t ruin all that healthy eating you’re doing!
Many popular instant hot cocoa mixes have an ingredient list that look something like this:
SUGAR, CORN SYRUP, VEGETABLE OIL (PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED PALM KERNAL AND SOYBEAN), DAIRY PRODUCT SOLIDS, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, LESS THEN 2% OF CELLULOSE GUM, NONFAT MILK, SALT, SODIUM CASEINATE, SODIUM CITRATE, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM ALUMINOSILICATE, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS.
So instead, why don’t we stick to a few BASIC, CLEAN eating (and drinking) ingredients:
Healthy Hot Cocoa
1 cup milk (unsweetened vanilla almond or so milk, or skim milk)
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder
1 1/2 Tbsp raw unrefined sugar, Truvia (stevia) , OR coconut palm sugar
1 drop peppermint extract, 1 tsp vanilla and or 1/2 tsp cinnamon
In a small bowl combine cocoa powder and sweetener. Heat the milk in small sauce pan over medium heat. Stir in the chocolate mixture until steaming. Add the drop of peppermint extract and or vanilla and cinnamon.
On top of enjoying a low fat, delicious, chocolatey treat you are also feeding your body iron and antioxidants from the unprocessed cocoa and blood sugar, blood pressure control from the cinnamon!!
Now that you’ve warmed your insides, get outside for a brisk walk with your dog, friend, or significant other : )
